The hidden world of sound

Behind every LUNASON instrument lies a process of research, experimentation, and development. The course "The Hidden World of Sound" offers a glimpse into precisely this world: the ideas, materials, acoustic principles, and design decisions that give rise to new instruments and new sonic possibilities. At the heart of the course is the instrumentarium developed by LUNASON. Participants will get to know selected instruments up close and learn how sound is influenced by material, form, vibration, resonance, and construction. It will become visible and audible that an instrument is far more than the finished object: it is the result of a continuous interplay of artistic vision, acoustic research, craftsmanship, and practical experimentation. Using specific instruments and development processes, participants will gain insights into LUNASON's work. They will learn how initial ideas are born, how materials are selected and analyzed, the role of prototypes, and how instruments evolve throughout their development. Different sound bodies, strings, surfaces, and resonance systems are examined, and their sonic properties are made directly tangible. Participants also have the opportunity to try out instruments themselves, compare sounds, and experiment with different forms of sound production and resonance. This fosters a direct understanding of how closely listening, researching, designing, and developing are intertwined. "The Hidden World of Sound" reveals what normally remains hidden behind the finished instrument—and offers a unique insight into the development of new instruments and soundscapes at LUNASON.
