Trigon

Resonance with a finer contour

TRIGON is the second Metasonic Resonator developed by LUNASON. Like NAOS, it belongs to the family of Resonance Chambers, but within this family, it pursues its own distinct sonic concept. While NAOS creates a very large, long-lasting resonance, TRIGON operates more subtly, softly, and somewhat more directly. It, too, can create an almost cathedral-like space, but this is less dominant. The original sound remains closer, yet simultaneously gains a new spatial and metallic dimension.

A key feature of TRIGON is its triangular shape. Three resonating metal surfaces form a body that radiates sound into the room in different ways. The varying orientations of the surfaces create multiple projection directions; the resonator thus interacts with the space differently than a rectangular soundboard. Reflection, material vibration, and spatial propagation combine to create a unique acoustic characteristic.

In addition, there are the strategically placed resonance openings. These allow some of the sound generated inside to escape to the outside, thus influencing how resonance and direct sound combine. This results in a softer and more rounded sound transmission. The metallic character remains clearly perceptible, but appears less massive and acquires a more refined contour.

TRIGON also possesses a distinct spectral identity. The transmitted sound material excites the metal surfaces and the interior of the resonator, thereby imbuing it with additional resonances and a characteristic metallic coloration. The resonator therefore does not reproduce the input signal neutrally. It reacts to it, alters it, and adds its own materiality. Depending on the instrument, pitch, dynamics, and sound structure, different regions of its resonance spectrum emerge.

The reverberation is clearly present, but shorter than with NAOS. A sound triggered by a TRIGON can continue to resonate for approximately 20 seconds, gradually dissipating into the room. This shorter reverberation time is not a limitation, but rather part of its inherent character. Sounds remain more fluid and immediate, while simultaneously generating sufficient resonance to carry them beyond their initial impulse.

This makes TRIGON particularly suitable for situations where the transformation through resonance should be audible without a very long reverberation dominating the musical event. It can give a sound more body and spatial presence, color it metallically and prolong it, while still preserving its contours.

Its lower height also influences spatial perception. TRIGON radiates sound differently than NAOS, and its triangular geometry distributes the sound across several differently oriented surfaces. The resonator itself thus becomes a spatial instrument: its shape is not merely aesthetic, but an integral part of its acoustic behavior.

As with all Metasonic Resonators, a wide variety of sound sources can be connected to TRIGON – acoustic instruments, Metasonic Instruments, voices, percussive sounds, or electronic audio material. Its true voice only emerges from the interplay of the original sound, the metal body, the resonance openings, and the room.

TRIGON represents a more refined form of metasonic resonance: soft, round, and spacious, with a clearly perceptible metallic spectral color. It prolongs the sound without completely dissolving it into reverberation, thus creating a resonance space that remains both characterful and transparent.
